Years ago a debunked study suggested that vaccines are causing autism. Researchers have shown this was bad science but why are so many people on the autism spectrum?

A recent NY Times article investigated why one in every 36 children is now diagnosed to be on the autism spectrum. According to the CDC, in 2000, it was 1 in 150.

According to the NY Times article “Autism spectrum disorder, as it is officially called, is inherently wide-ranging, marked by a blend of social and communication issues, repetitive behaviors and thinking patterns that vary in severity. “

My son is on the spectrum and is high-functioning. True, children are having more vaccines than ever before.

There are about 100 genes that contribute to Autism. What activates them in our environment is not understood however, our increased classification of the disorder may partially explain why more cases are being diagnosed.

Perhaps the increased awareness of what autism spectrum disorders are is also driving the numbers on how many children have the disorder.

Does nutrition play a part? Time will tell as we learn more. Check out the article from the NY Times below
