Scientists have known about the neurons in the gut, sometimes called our second brain. According to a study in 2020, this brain-gut connection suggests 12 types of neurons make up the second brain, also called the gut-brain. This second nervous system affects our metabolism and our function, including emotion. Of course, the biome that exists of the bugs that we all have which help digestion is part of how this communication works. The brain gut may have something to do with our weight regulation too which is why it is important to properly feed the gut. Health is not something you worry about when you get older and a doctor scares you into compliance with pills and medical procedures. Health is the way you choose to live. Poor eating habits such as too much sugar, alcohol or processed foods may affect the brain-gut and in ways that affect our overall health. I remember during my Safari Trip in 2022 how the guides described how animals instinctually know what to eat to nourish themselves and animals that die nourish other animals that live. I remember his describing how animals will lick the skeletons of animals that passed to get the minerals they need such as calcium. While this is part of the balance of nature, apparently these brain-gut connections exists in most if not all animals and is a primal part of how we survive and thrive. Stress has effects on this system as well with some of us having more problems than others. Ask anyone whose stomach is problematic with stress and they will tell you that it triggers pain and intestinal symptoms, sometimes called IBS but these connections are poorly understood.
