A new study from the University of South Australia is beginning to confirm the idea that injuries to female athletes are more common with poor nutrition. The study, which reviewed 6000 runners, suggests that lower energy and fat intakes were strongly associated with a higher risk of injury in female runners.

While it is understood that poor nutrition can cause Amenorrhea in female runners when their body fat ratios are reduced, muscular wasting and a loss of important minerals such as calcium can also occur. The study also shows that a low-fibre diet increased the likelihood of bone stress injuries in both female and male runners.

The study shows that many athletes miscalculate their calorie consumption needs, resulting in more stress fractures, fatigue and a loss of lean body mass.
