A recent NY Times article opinion piece described what many people feel over the age of 40. It discusses the idea that aging occurs in waves and that as we age, injuries just happen to us.

While I can attest to many of these changes happening as I age, I can also suggest that the game changes as we age too.

Sure, there are changes in the spine including discs that drug out, and less mobility. less hair, more difficulties losing weight, etc., but if you play the game better before you hit your 40’s and are willing to take ownership and live a better lifestyle, you do not have to be the example that this article suggests is the norm.

You can read the article below

Like many of our patients, I went to the gym regularly, ran, biked, and did other things to keep myself in shape. My 6:30 mile days are long gone but I am now 65 and am very healthy and being a chiropractor keeps me in shape. Sure, I do many of the exercises I give others weekly to maintain myself but my regular habits of

  • Eating green leafy vegetables and staying away from sugar and unnecessary dairy consumption
  • Regular exercise to keep myself physically fit. My resting pulse is about 50 most weeks according to my Garmin watch which shows that years of good care of myself keeps my body performing at athletic levels.
  • I reduce inflammation in my body using deflame packs we carry in the office. It works. Science shows us inflammation in the body and gut is responsible for many of the autoimmune diseases people develop and this can be changed naturally. Health is not found in a pill. It is found in a lifestyle. Genetics help too but good habits reduce risk.
  • See a chiropractor and a massage therapist regularly. How we move affects how we feel and function. It is that simple but adherence to better habits allows us to age better.

Chiropractic care helps you move and function better. The medical model, as was depicted in the NY Times model is one we are all familiar with. Things just break because ….. In my book, Cheating Mother Nature, What You Need to Know to Beat Chronic Pain, I talk about body mechanics and how this affects how we feel, move, and function.

Like it or not, ignoring your body will affect you in your 40’s and beyond. Take care of the machine and it will take care of you. Chiropractors are often excellent health coaches less worried about a number attached to medical norms, but your overall lifestyle. If you have children having problems now, they should experience chiropractic care so as an adults, they are less likely to experience many of the typical beyond 40’s ailments that are often preventable. If you use the specialist for everything model, you are likely to experience tests, drugs, and procedures that have consequences later on. Something as simple as using foot orthotics when you are young can have great improvements on how you feel when you are over 40.
