In our society, we use shoes to walk around in most places. While shoes protect the feet, the neurology that powers the feet is similar to the neurology in our hands. If you want proof, there are many videos on YouTube showing people who missing limbs playing piano with their feet.

Many studies have shown that shoes that place your foot held in a box for hours weaken the feet and reduce dexterity which are in my experience, major reasons for why so many people in the USA have knee, back, and hip problems. Performing these exercises also reduces shin pain in runners.

Most Americans do not squat regularly and instead bend at the back. Many of these movements require flexible ankles and feet.

During our initial chiropractic evaluation, I always check for proper shoe fit. Too small a shoe further reduces foot movement. Too narrow a shoe does this too.

The barefoot running movement was borne out of the idea that barefoot was always better. While this was a result of a book called Born to Run and the barefoot movement that came from it, I also learned that some patients needed foot support and that there is no one-size-fits-all. I also learned about how to help patients with exercises to strengthen their feet.

The NY Times recently published an article covering their protocol for foot exercises. You can check it out below

Our patients are given this simple protocol called foot drills. They are easier and simpler to perform originating from soccer teams in Europe. 6 easy exercises improve knee, hip, and back function by improving tone and strength. While these are no substitute for chiropractic care and appropriate diagnosis and treatment, this will help build strength and flexibility in the feet. Check out the exercises below
