Can exercise make the fat on your body healthier?  Check out this NY Times article.

Are people who are overweight unhealthy if they exercise on a regular basis?   Different ideas about diet and exercise are shared on the internet on a regular basis.   Taking off the weight is a difficult task even with all this advice, especially as we age.

Why we lose or do not lose weight can include genetics, the flora in our gut that developed over the years from our eating habits, and our level of activity.   Diet and exercise are a winning combination to lose weight but without a change in lifestyle, often the weight returns as we found with contestants on “The Biggest Loser”. Some studies have shown that a fecal transplant, from a thinner to a heavier person changed metabolism enough to help the heavier person lose weight as the flora in the gut changed. Conversely, placing gut flora in a thinner person from a heavier person resulted in weight gain.

Periodic fasting is also another idea that has some merit since it helps reset how we process food in our system and it may keep us healthier. The way we eat is a product of the industrial age, since years ago, our eating habits were less regular and we have adapted to periodic fasting which was caused by the availability of food.  Before we had supermarkets and refrigeration, you needed to farm the vegetables and kill the animals you were going to consume for dinner.

If you are exercising regularly, but cannot shake those pounds, you may be healthier than you think according to a recent NY Times article. The article states that “a single session of exercise may change the molecular workings of fat tissue in ways that, over time, should improve metabolic health.”  While we may not believe fat looks good on us, the article also states that body fat is “ a busy and necessary tissue, producing and sending out multiple biochemical signals that affect biological operations throughout the body.

How Exercise Can Make for Healthier Fat

By GRETCHEN REYNOLDS DEC. 6, 2017

Exercise could help to make your fat tissue healthier, which, hear me out, is a good thing.

According to a timely new study, a single session of exercise may change the molecular workings of fat tissue in ways that, over time, should improve metabolic health.

This finding has particular relevance during the holidays, when, despite our best intentions, so many of us add to our fat stores. Exercise might make these annual bacchanals less metabolically damaging than otherwise.

Most of us probably think of our fat tissue as inert and undesirable. But our fat is, in fact, a busy and necessary tissue, producing and sending out multiple biochemical signals that affect biological operations throughout the body.
