Sex matters when taking prescription drugs says 60 minutes; Why doctors need to change their prescription habits

Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus was a very popular book years ago. The book talked about the many differences between the sexes. The medical profession is beginning to learn that women are different not only in body style, and structure, but also at a cellular level, their bodies work differently. Since their chemistry is indeed different, and so is their metabolism, doctors are rethinking how to recommend medications to women since they are now realizing that dosage in a women can have a very different effect than a similar dosage in a man.

My mother used to complain about her tolerance to many of the drugs that were prescribed to her and the side effects. Perhaps, the problem was with the dosage, rather than the drug itself. For years, physicians were taught about dosage but were not told about dosing differently because of the persons sex. Apparently, that may be about to change because physiologically, women pound for pound tolerate drug dosages differently than their male counterparts, forcing the medical profession to rethink the one size fits all methods of dosing medications in the past.
